Compare Feature Retention in Amplitude
Compare adopters and non-adopters with equal opportunity and a clearly timed exposure definition. Higher retention among adopters is an association: engaged users may be more likely both to adopt and to return.
Before you start: Have a validated feature-success event, meaningful return event and cohorts with enough follow-up. Avoid defining adoption using behavior that occurs after the retention outcome.
Worked example: Compare new eligible owners who export a report in their first week with similar owners who do not, then measure later return. Keep the adoption window separate from the return period.
Step-by-step guide
Define the eligible population
Limit the analysis to users who could access the feature. Record role, plan and rollout constraints.
Bound the adoption window
Specify when adoption is observed relative to entry. Do not allow future behavior to define a supposedly earlier group.
Choose the return outcome
Use a meaningful value event after the adoption window. Keep setup behavior separate from enduring use.
Align follow-up time
Give both groups the same chance to return. Exclude immature cohorts or label them incomplete.
Check selection differences
Compare tenure, acquisition and prior engagement where appropriate. Acknowledge that these checks do not eliminate all confounding.
Report association and next steps
Show cohort counts and definitions with the retention result. Use a suitable experiment or stronger design before making a causal feature claim.
Common mistakes
Future behavior defines adopters
That can bake retention into the group definition.
Ineligible controls
People without access are an unfair comparison.
Correlation marketed as impact
Selection effects remain without a causal design.
Tips
Separate the adoption and return periods.
Show cohort counts beside percentages.
Check prior engagement as a plausible confounder.
