Configure Consistent PostHog Dashboard Filters

Apply dashboard filters, then inspect the effective settings on individual tiles. Shared controls do not guarantee every tile uses the same query, especially when saved insights or tile overrides carry their own settings.

Before you start: Have edit access, saved insights and a written review audience. List tiles whose dates or exclusions intentionally differ before changing shared filters.

Worked example: A launch dashboard shows weekly activation beside a revenue tile with a different period. Make the exception explicit rather than assuming one date selector aligns both.

Step-by-step guide

01

Define the review scope

Choose the audience, period and exclusions the dashboard is meant to represent. Write those assumptions above the charts.

02

Apply shared controls

Set the relevant dashboard filters and date range. Distinguish a property restriction from a change to the chart’s underlying metric definition.

03

Inspect tile overrides

Open representative tiles and examine their effective filters. Check warnings or settings that override or ignore shared dashboard controls.

04

Test a known segment

Choose an easily verified audience and compare the tile with its standalone insight. Investigate a mismatch before publishing the board.

05

Explain intentional exceptions

Label tiles that need a different period or population. Keep them separate enough that readers do not compare incompatible values as though they were peers.

06

Save a reproducible review

Record the chosen settings with the meeting notes or a saved view. Recheck critical tiles after changes to their underlying insights.

Common mistakes

One selector means one population

Tile behavior can differ. Inspect the effective query.

Hidden date exceptions

A fixed tile range can undermine a week-over-week comparison. Label it.

Filter changes metric meaning silently

Excluding a segment changes the denominator. Explain the revision.

Tips

Keep one test segment for validating dashboard behavior.

Label intentional date-range exceptions in tile context.

Check saved insight changes before the next recurring review.
