How to Connect Sentry to Linear for Faster Bug Triage

Sentry tells you something is broken. Linear is where the team decides what to fix and tracks the work. Without a connection between them, someone copies a stack trace into a new Linear issue, the link to the Sentry event gets lost, and nobody can tell whether the error stopped after the fix shipped.

Sentry's Linear integration links the two, so you can create Linear issues from Sentry issues with the error context attached and see the connection from both sides. This guide covers installing the integration, creating and linking issues, setting up a triage routine, and closing the loop after a fix.

Spec to tickets

Working in Linear? Turn your spec into dependency-ordered tickets.

Paste the feature or spec. Vantage pulls out the requirements and breaks them into tickets, ordered by what blocks what, ready to groom with your team.

How this works

  1. We save what you typed. No AI runs on this page.
  2. You create a free account.
  3. Vantage builds a PRD and dependency-ordered tickets from it inside your own workspace.

Why ask for an account? We’re a small team, and a full generation runs a multi-step AI pipeline that costs us real money. So we tie it to a free account instead of running it anonymously. You also get to keep the result and edit it.

Step-by-step guide

01

Install the Linear integration in Sentry

In Sentry, open Settings, then Integrations, and find Linear. Install it and authorize access to your Linear workspace. You need appropriate permissions in both tools. Once installed, Sentry issues gain the option to create or link Linear issues.

  • Open Sentry Settings and go to Integrations
  • Find and install the Linear integration
  • Authorize access to your Linear workspace
  • Confirm the integration appears as installed
02

Create a Linear issue from a Sentry issue

Open a Sentry issue and use the linked issues area to create a Linear issue. Choose the team and fill in a title that describes the user impact, not just the exception name. The Linear issue includes a link back to the Sentry issue, so the engineer can see the stack trace, frequency, and affected users.

  • Open the Sentry issue
  • Create a new Linear issue from the linked issues section
  • Select the Linear team
  • Write a title that describes user impact
03

Link existing Linear issues

If a Linear issue already exists for the problem, link it rather than creating a duplicate. Multiple Sentry issues caused by the same bug can link to one Linear issue, which keeps the work in one place.

04

Set up a triage routine

Decide who reviews new Sentry issues and how often. A common pattern is a rotating triage owner who checks new and regressed issues daily, creates Linear issues for anything worth fixing, and ignores or archives noise. Use Sentry's issue filters and alerts so the triage owner sees what matters first.

  • Assign a rotating triage owner
  • Review new and regressed issues daily
  • Create or link Linear issues for real problems
  • Archive or ignore known noise with a note
05

Prioritize by impact

Use Sentry data to set Linear priority: number of affected users, frequency, whether the error is in a critical flow such as checkout or signup, and whether it is a regression. Put this information in the Linear issue so planning discussions are based on impact rather than how scary the stack trace looks.

06

Use alerts to catch urgent issues

Configure Sentry alert rules for high-impact conditions, such as a spike in a critical transaction or a new issue in a core flow, and route them to the right Slack channel or on-call tool. Depending on your integration setup, some alerts can create issues automatically; otherwise, the triage owner creates them from the alert.

07

Close the loop after the fix

When the fix ships, resolve the Sentry issue, ideally tied to the release that contains the fix. If the error returns, Sentry marks it as a regression, which tells you the fix did not hold. Check the linked Linear issue's history so the context of the previous fix is available.

Common mistakes

Creating a Linear issue for every Sentry event

Not every error deserves a ticket. Triage first, and archive or ignore noise so the backlog reflects real work.

Titles that are just exception names

'TypeError: cannot read property of undefined' tells planners nothing. Describe the user impact in the title.

Not resolving in Sentry after a fix

If Sentry issues stay unresolved, you lose regression detection. Resolve them when the fix ships.

Tips

Add a 'sentry' label in Linear to issues created from errors so you can measure bug load.

Include affected user counts in the Linear description when you create the issue.

Review regressed issues weekly to spot fixes that did not hold.

Use Sentry releases so you can see which deploy introduced or fixed an error.

How Vantage helps

Error data is a signal that often deserves more than a bug ticket. When a Sentry pattern points to a product problem, PMs can bring it into Vantage as context, write a PRD grounded in the evidence, and generate dependency-aware tickets that push to Linear with bi-directional sync.
