Jira Product Discovery: Idea description templates
Create a Jira Product Discovery description template from an idea’s Description → Templates → + Create a template.
Use it to collect consistent evidence rather than prefill a prioritization conclusion. An idea template structures the description; contributor create-form configuration is a separate administrative choice.
Step-by-step guide
Choose the recurring intake task
Use a creator account with access to edit the idea description. Open an idea representative of the submission you want to improve. For example, a customer-problem template should ask for the affected workflow, observed difficulty, source and unanswered question. Do not require a proposed solution when the problem itself is still uncertain.
Create the description template
Under Description, select Templates, then + Create a template. Enter a clear title such as “Customer problem” and the structured content. Add a gallery description explaining when this template is useful, then select Save.
Apply it to a sample idea
Open a new sample idea and choose the saved template from Templates. Fill it with a concrete observation: a finance user cannot identify which invoice export failed. Check that the resulting description distinguishes observed evidence from the team’s interpretation.
Connect it to intake deliberately
If contributors should see this template in the create form, ask a space admin to use + Create → Configure form and choose the description template for the relevant type. Test the contributor preview instead of assuming every description template is automatically the default.
Common mistakes
Confusing a template with required fields
A description structure guides authors. Configure the contributor create form separately when the intake process needs specific required field values.
