Create Issue Links in Jira
Use Jira work-item links to express blocking, related or duplicate relationships. A link records a relationship; it does not by itself enforce scheduling or move another issue through its workflow.
Step-by-step guide
Check access and scope
Issue linking must be enabled and you need the relevant link and browse permissions for both records. Your Jira interface may use work item instead of issue.
Identify the prerequisite
Open the dependent issue and identify the exact prerequisite.
Choose the link type
Use the link action and choose the appropriate relation. On the board, right-click a work item or use its more-actions menu and choose Link work item; the detail view offers a linked-work action too.
- Worked example: Link the invite UI as blocked by the token API only if implementation truly needs that contract. Link background research as related when it informs scope but does not block execution.
Select the target issue
Select the target key and verify link direction.
Explain unblock evidence
Describe the condition required to unblock delivery.
Review both records
Review both records with their owners.
Verify the result
Both issue records show the expected relationship and owners agree on the condition that changes it.
Common mistakes
Check the handoff edge case
A link without an explanation forces the receiving owner to infer the contract. Add the artifact or condition needed to unblock work.
