How to Create a Product Demo Video in Loom
A well-produced Loom product demo video compounds over time: record it once and it replaces dozens of live demos, onboards new users, answers sales questions, and serves as a reference for your engineering team. The difference between a forgettable screen recording and a compelling product demo video is preparation, narrative structure, and basic production hygiene.
This guide walks through creating a polished product demo video in Loom from script to distribution, including techniques for handling common recording challenges.
Step-by-step guide
Set up a demo environment with seed data
Create a dedicated demo account in your staging environment populated with realistic but fictional data. Name the demo user "Alex Chen" or something neutral. Populate the account with enough data to tell a story — empty screens are unconvincing. In Loom, test your screen capture of this environment before recording. Confirm the Loom extension has screen recording permissions in your browser's Privacy & Security settings.
Write a voice script, not bullet points
Write out the exact words you will say for each segment. Read it aloud once — you will catch unnatural phrasing. A script eliminates "um," "uh," and "so basically" filler that makes recordings feel unpolished. Paste the script into a notes window you can see while recording. Loom's Teleprompter feature (available in Business plan) displays your script on top of the recording interface.
Record in segments using Loom's Stitch feature
Do not try to record the entire demo in one take. Record each section separately: intro, feature walkthrough, and closing. In Loom's video editor, click "Stitch Videos" to combine multiple recordings into a single video. This approach lets you re-record one segment without redoing the whole demo.
Add text overlays and annotations
In Loom's editor, use the Text tool to add overlays that reinforce your narration: "Reduces onboarding time by 60%", "Works with any existing Linear workspace." Click the + button on the video timeline and select Text Overlay. Place overlays at moments when you are making a key claim so viewers see the text and hear the claim simultaneously.
Record a custom thumbnail
Loom auto-generates a thumbnail from the first frame of your video, which is often a blank screen or your cursor mid-movement. In video settings, click Change Thumbnail and upload a custom image — a screenshot of the most impressive moment in the demo. Videos with custom thumbnails have significantly higher click-through rates in email and Slack.
Publish with password protection for early access demos
For demos of unreleased features, go to Loom video settings and enable Password Protection. Set a simple password and share it with the intended audience. This prevents the video from being forwarded to competitors or indexed by search engines. For public feature demos, leave password off and enable the Loom index so it can be found via Loom's search.
Common mistakes
Demoing features in the order they were built
Engineers build features in dependency order. Users use features in workflow order. Demo from the user's perspective: start with the trigger (I have a problem), not the solution (here is the settings page). The most common mistake is opening a settings page before showing why the user would want to open it.
No audio quality investment
Video quality is forgivable. Audio quality is not. A pixelated screen with clear audio is watchable. A beautiful screen with echo or background noise is not. Record in a room with soft furnishings, use a USB microphone or AirPods, and do a 30-second audio test before your full recording.
Skipping the "so what" conclusion
Most demo videos end abruptly after the last feature. Always include a closing statement connecting the feature to the outcome: "With this workflow, your team goes from ticket to staging in under 4 hours instead of two days." The conclusion is what viewers remember.
Using the recording for internal and external audiences simultaneously
Internal demos can include rough edges, roadmap previews, and honest technical caveats. Customer demos cannot. Create separate recordings for each audience rather than trying to make one recording serve both.
Tips
Do a practice run at 1.5x your normal speaking pace — you will naturally slow down in the real recording and land at the right tempo
Use Loom's Custom Trim feature to cut mid-sentence if you stumble — the audio cut sounds cleaner than restarting the sentence
Add your company's branded intro and outro frames as image overlays in the Loom editor
Re-record demos every major release — outdated UI screenshots in a product demo erode trust with prospects who see a different interface than what was shown
How Vantage helps
Vantage's prototype generation feature creates interactive HTML prototypes from your PRD. These prototypes make excellent bases for Loom demo recordings — the prototype matches the spec exactly, uses realistic data from your PRD context, and eliminates the need to configure a staging environment just to record a demo.
