Create a GitHub Projects Roadmap
Choose a roadmap layout and map the intended date or iteration fields to its timeline. Dragging items changes field values, so scheduling edits should be deliberate.
Step-by-step guide
Check access and scope
You need project write access and useful date or iteration fields. Confirm which target date represents a commitment versus an exploratory plan.
Choose Roadmap layout
Create or select the project view and choose Roadmap layout.
Map scheduling fields
Open Date fields and select the start and target fields. Roadmap > Date fields selects which date or iteration fields position the bars; verify both Start date and Target date.
- Worked example: Show internal validation and limited rollout tasks using their actual work windows. A security review with unknown timing should remain visibly unresolved rather than receiving an arbitrary reassuring date.
Group relevant work
Group or filter by a relevant delivery dimension.
Add useful markers
Add useful markers for milestones or iteration boundaries.
Review unscheduled items
Review undated items and verify a sample bar against its fields.
Verify the result
The timeline positions match field values and owners understand changes made during planning.
Common mistakes
Check the handoff edge case
A timeline can look complete while important undated work is absent. Maintain an unscheduled-work review alongside it.
