Create Project Templates in Linear
Create a project template with reusable issues and milestones, then adapt each generated project to its actual delivery needs. The template supplies structure; it does not validate the new project scope.
Step-by-step guide
Check access and scope
Choose workspace or team scope deliberately. A team-specific template may not appear when creating work in another team.
Choose template scope
Create the project template in workspace or team template settings. Create workspace templates from Settings > Templates or use the individual team template settings for team-only reuse.
Define project defaults
Define the repeatable description, milestone structure and default ownership.
- Worked example: A feature-release template might create design approval, instrumentation check and rollback review issues. Each generated project must name its actual metric and rollback owner rather than retaining placeholder text.
Add delivery issues
Add concrete issue templates for required delivery checks.
Generate a sample project
Create a sample project from the template.
Remove stale assumptions
Remove irrelevant work and confirm that generated issue details are correct.
Verify the result
A sample project contains the expected milestones and issues, with no stale people or accidental commitments.
Common mistakes
Avoid the main failure mode
A template that includes every conceivable check becomes noise. Keep mandatory controls separate from optional examples.
Check the handoff edge case
Including old calendar dates in reusable project content creates false deadlines. Use instructions instead of fixed dates to choose current ones.
