Create Dovetail Highlights with Context
Highlight a meaningful passage with enough surrounding context to preserve what the participant meant. A short compelling clip is useful only when another reader can verify its source and interpret its limits.
Before you start: Have access to the relevant data and permission to create highlights. Confirm the recording or document is appropriate to share within the study.
Worked example: A participant says invitations are confusing only when discussing external contractors. Keep that condition with the quote rather than presenting it as a claim about every teammate invitation.
Step-by-step guide
Find the relevant passage
Start from a research question or observed problem, not from the most dramatic sentence.
Check surrounding context
Read or listen before and after the passage. Identify whether it is a firsthand experience, hypothetical answer or response to a leading prompt.
Create the highlight
Select the passage and use the supported Highlight action. Keep the boundary large enough to preserve qualifiers.
Label cautiously
Use a short factual description and appropriate existing tags. Avoid writing a causal conclusion that the passage does not support.
Verify the source link
Open the highlight from its saved context and check that it returns to the intended material. Review access before sharing.
Use it as evidence
Combine the highlight with other relevant and contradictory sources in the finding. Do not let one vivid quote stand in for prevalence.
Common mistakes
Qualifiers cut away
That changes meaning.
Title overstates the quote
Keep interpretation separate.
One clip proves prevalence
Count independent sources and retain limits.
Tips
Preserve negation and conditional wording.
Check speaker attribution for important quotes.
Include counterevidence in the related finding.
