Build a Dovetail Research Question Framework
Begin with the decision and what the team needs to learn, then translate those needs into research questions. This manual framework guides a study; it does not make a leading interview prompt neutral.
Before you start: Have a bounded product decision, the intended audience and an owner who can act on the findings. Review existing evidence first.
Worked example: Before making invitations mandatory, ask when owners have a teammate ready to involve and what prevents them. Do not start with would you like mandatory invitations?
Step-by-step guide
State the decision
Write what the team may change and which uncertainty blocks that choice. Keep the study from becoming a general product tour.
Review what is known
List existing evidence and its limits. Avoid repeating research merely because sources are hard to find.
Write learning questions
Ask about behavior, context and obstacles rather than approval of a proposed feature. Keep each question answerable by a suitable method.
Choose the method
Separate what interviews can reveal from what needs behavioral measurement or technical verification. Do not ask participants to estimate facts the system can measure.
Prepare neutral prompts
Turn the learning questions into concrete discussions of recent experience. Trial the prompts for leading language and ambiguous terms.
Store the study brief
Keep the questions, audience, method and decision boundary in the project’s overview or appropriate Doc. Review findings against the original questions.
Common mistakes
Feature approval as research
A hypothetical yes may not predict behavior.
Too many unrelated questions
The evidence becomes shallow.
Method cannot answer
Match the question to suitable observation.
Tips
Ask about a recent concrete example.
Keep the decision boundary visible.
Mark questions that require analytics rather than recollection.
