Hand Off Dovetail Research Synthesis
Hand off a concise Doc that explains the finding, evidence and decision boundary, then verify the recipient can use it. The goal is to transfer research understanding rather than simply forward a repository link.
Before you start: Have reviewed synthesis, an intended decision owner and an access model. Decide which source material the recipient genuinely needs.
Worked example: A product team reviewing invite permissions needs the observed obstacle, affected context and unresolved question. It may not need unrestricted access to every raw interview recording.
Step-by-step guide
Write the decision brief
State the product question and the main finding. Include the audience boundary immediately so the result is not overgeneralized.
Link the evidence
Use representative highlights and source references. Keep personal data out of the brief when it does not change the decision.
Explain uncertainty
Include contradictory cases, sampling limits and open questions. Separate a recommendation from an established observation.
Define the requested action
Ask the recipient to make a decision, validate a constraint or own a next study. Avoid an ambiguous request for general feedback.
Verify access
Check the Doc’s permissions and the linked evidence with an intended reader. Do not broaden raw-data visibility merely for convenience.
Close the loop
Record the decision or follow-up and link it back to the research. Preserve why a recommendation was accepted, changed or deferred.
Common mistakes
Link without context
Readers cannot tell what decision it informs.
Raw access over-shared
A summary consumer may not need recordings.
No response recorded
Research loses its connection to the product choice.
Tips
Put the requested decision beside the main finding.
Keep source access proportionate to the task.
Record the product team’s response in the handoff Doc.
