Create Plane Work Item Types for Bugs and Requests
Enable Plane Work Item Types and add named types under Project settings > Work item Types. Types control which custom properties appear on the work item.
This is documented as a Pro feature and requires Project Admin access. Enabling Types is irreversible. Enterprise Grid can manage types at workspace level; self-hosted availability depends on edition and version.
Example: create Bug with environment and reproduction context while leaving routine engineering work as Task, rather than forcing every work item into a large bug form.
Step-by-step guide
Check the configuration scope
Open the project menu > Settings > Work item Types. For an Enterprise Grid governed workspace, ask its administrator to use the workspace-level type configuration.
Enable Types intentionally
Read and confirm the irreversible enablement prompt. Plane creates Task and Epic types automatically; inspect them before introducing another overlapping category.
Create the specific type
Click Add Work item Type. Enter Bug, explain when it applies, choose an icon and background color, and create it. Turn its active toggle on so creators can select it.
Create a representative Bug
Open the new work-item form, select Bug at the top left and inspect its properties. Save a real example and verify its icon and type are visible on the resulting item.
Common mistakes
Expecting to disable the whole feature
Once enabled, Work Item Types cannot be turned off for the project. Individual types can be disabled instead.
