Import Projects from CSV into Asana
Map CSV columns to task fields and validate a representative sample before importing the full project. Importing content does not establish an approved schedule or correct ownership by itself.
Step-by-step guide
Check access and scope
Retain the source file and choose a destination where you can create tasks. Agree on date formats and assignee identity mapping.
Prepare clear source columns
Prepare clear columns for task name, description, owner and dates. Use Asana user email addresses for assignee mapping and the documented month/day/year format for due dates; preserve a header row with title-case field names.
Choose supported structure
Include parent or section structure only in a supported format.
- Worked example: Test an unassigned request, a dated task and a task with multiline acceptance criteria. Confirm that the date 03/04 is interpreted as intended rather than relying on local assumptions.
Open the CSV importer
Open the project import controls and select the CSV.
Review field mappings
Review the field mapping and run a small sample.
Validate imported samples
Check imported tasks before repeating the process for the remaining data. CSV import adds tasks rather than updating existing tasks; a bad value in a date column can cause the column to import as text instead.
Verify the result
The sample preserves task text, intended ownership and date meaning without unexpected extra records.
Common mistakes
Check the handoff edge case
Using ambiguous numeric dates can shift deadlines silently. Standardize the source format and inspect the imported date values.
