How to invite a space guest in Confluence
Invite a Confluence guest as an organization or site admin, then assign the guest to one space; the invitation alone is insufficient.
Use guest access for an eligible external collaborator, such as a research contractor. Check current guest eligibility and site limits rather than treating the Guest role as a cheaper employee account.
Step-by-step guide
Prepare a suitable collaboration space
Choose the single space the contractor needs and inspect its content and anonymous-access settings. Guests can reach anonymously accessible spaces as well, so a single-space assignment is not a substitute for a site-wide public-content review.
Invite with the Guest app role
In admin.atlassian.com, select the organization, then Directory → Users → Invite users. Enter the external email, deselect the Confluence User role and select Guest instead. Review other app roles before sending the invitation.
Assign the space
In Confluence administration, open Settings → Permissions → Guest access. Find the active guest and choose the intended space in Confluence access. Invited users may not yet be searchable until they activate; ensure the guest completes their invitation flow.
Validate their actual experience
Ask the contractor to open a permitted project page and confirm the necessary view or edit access. Guests cannot use Confluence without an assigned space. Review the assignment when the contract ends and remove space access when collaboration is complete.
Common mistakes
Leaving the regular User role selected
That can make the invitation a regular paid-user invitation. Check app roles before sending.
