How to link to page anchors in Confluence
Link directly to a Confluence section by hovering beside its heading and copying the heading-link icon’s URL.
Use an Anchor link macro for a stable named target that is not a heading. For a large launch checklist, a direct escalation-section link saves readers from searching the entire document.
Step-by-step guide
Choose a destination that will remain meaningful
Find the exact heading or named anchor. For example, link an incident handoff to the “Rollback decision” section rather than the top of a long launch plan. Confirm the intended recipient can access the destination document.
Copy the heading link
While viewing the destination, hover to the right of the heading and select the link icon. Confluence copies the section URL. Prefer this generated link to manually guessing how punctuation or spaces are encoded in a heading fragment.
Insert readable link text
On the source page, highlight “Rollback decision criteria” and use Cmd+K or Ctrl+K to insert the copied URL. If using an Anchor link macro on the same page, enter # followed by its exact case-sensitive anchor name.
Test the route as a reader
Publish and open the link from the source. Check that it reaches the intended section and remains understandable after a title or document-structure change. For a cross-page anchor, use the destination page URL plus # and the configured anchor name.
Common mistakes
Guessing heading fragments
Copied heading URLs avoid mistakes in generated anchors. Use exact names when linking to an explicit Anchor link macro.
