Jira Product Discovery: Merge duplicate ideas
Merge duplicate Jira Product Discovery ideas by choosing a target and explicitly selecting the description, fields and content to retain.
Open an idea’s menu to Merge, or select several ideas in a list. Review evidence before merging: similar titles can describe different customer problems.
Step-by-step guide
Confirm that the ideas share one problem
Compare descriptions, affected segments, evidence and delivery links. For example, “Explain failed exports” and “Show export failure reason” may match, while “Schedule exports” describes another outcome. Keep both when scope differs despite overlapping keywords.
Choose the surviving idea
Open a duplicate and select Merge from its right-panel menu, or select multiple ideas in the list and choose Merge. Pick the target intentionally, using its established context and references rather than assuming the newest title should survive.
Review retained content and values
Inspect the merge choices and choose the description and field values to keep. Combine the customer observations without turning repeated copies of one interview into independent evidence. Select Merge only after checking which idea is the target.
Validate and preserve the recovery route
Open the target and inspect the retained description and evidence. If the merge was wrong, the target’s merged from section lets you open each merged idea and restore it from the archive. Recheck the recovered ideas rather than assuming every edit to the target is reversed.
Common mistakes
Merging on title similarity alone
Read the actual problem and customer context; a shared feature word does not establish duplicate intent.
