Jira Product Discovery: Plan ideas on a timeline
Plan Jira Product Discovery ideas on a timeline by creating a Timeline view and selecting both Start date and Target date fields.
Use months or quarters to communicate planning horizons and uncertainty. A timeline visualizes the date fields you select; it does not independently prove a delivery commitment.
Step-by-step guide
Choose the planning dates and audience
Use a creator or space administrator with Manage Views permission. Decide whether the view shows discovery work or intended delivery. Ask a space admin to create Date fields for its Start and Target values if needed. For an experiment, distinguish “research starts” from a delivery epic’s engineering start date.
Create and configure the timeline
Select Views → + Create a view → Timeline view, name it and use Select fields to assign Start date field and Target date field. Both are required. Set the visible timescale to months or quarters for the discussion you are holding.
Place a worked example
Give an onboarding experiment a start of November 9 and target of November 23 in the relevant year. Verify that its bar spans the intended period. Choose Summary, Compact or Detailed layout depending on how much supporting information reviewers need.
Check omissions and communicate uncertainty
Inspect ideas missing from the view: dates outside the visible range will not display. Use About this view to explain what the dates mean and identify tentative windows. If you add a launch time marker, treat it as context rather than automatic rescheduling logic.
Common mistakes
Using discovery targets as promised release dates
Explain the meaning and confidence of the selected date fields so viewers do not mistake an exploration window for a contractual commitment.
