Review Amplitude Data Taxonomy
A taxonomy review should test whether the tracked events can answer the team’s actual questions. Consistent spelling matters, but meaningful triggers, property coverage and ownership determine whether the data is useful.
Before you start: Have the tracking plan, core metrics and representative payloads. Include both an analyst and the engineers responsible for emission.
Worked example: Two teams track Document Created and document_created with different success conditions. Renaming one is insufficient until the team agrees what creation means and which reports depend on it.
Step-by-step guide
Start with decisions
List the product questions and metrics that matter now. Map each one to the events and properties it requires.
Find overlapping meanings
Compare names and trigger definitions. Separate genuine duplicates from events that describe different stages of a workflow.
Inspect missing context
Check whether necessary roles, outcomes and stable identifiers are available across relevant events. Avoid adding fields without a specific analytical purpose.
Verify implementation
Inspect samples from normal and failure cases on each important platform. Mark definitions that differ from real payloads.
Plan migration
Prioritize changes by decision impact and consumer dependencies. Preserve continuity or an explicit coverage boundary when semantics change.
Assign stewardship
Record owners and review triggers. Keep a change history so future analysts can understand why a trend crosses a measurement boundary.
Common mistakes
Cosmetic cleanup only
Names can look consistent while triggers differ.
Delete before consumers
Existing analyses may depend on the event.
Every possible property
More fields do not automatically create better decisions.
Tips
Map each proposed field to a question.
Keep duplicate-event decisions explicit.
Review taxonomy during material workflow changes.
