Track Open Research Questions in Dovetail
Keep unresolved questions in a maintained research Doc linked to the relevant evidence and decision. This is a manual research backlog, not a claim that Dovetail automatically prioritizes every uncertainty.
Before you start: Have study findings, decision context and an owner for research follow-through. Keep sensitive source links appropriately restricted.
Worked example: The team knows owners struggle with invitations but does not know whether timing or permission language matters more. Track that specific uncertainty rather than adding improve onboarding to a vague list.
Step-by-step guide
Capture the question
Write what remains unknown and why it matters. Avoid disguising a preferred solution as a research question.
Link existing evidence
Record what is already known and the sources that prompted the gap. This prevents repeated discovery of the same context.
State decision consequence
Explain what would change if the answer were different. Deprioritize questions with no current decision relevance.
Assign ownership
Name who will decide the next method and when the question will be reviewed. Keep ownership separate from the person who first raised it.
Choose proportionate follow-up
Select interview, observation, analytics or technical verification according to the question. Do not default every gap to another broad survey.
Close or revise
Record the answer and evidence when resolved, or explain why it remains open. Preserve the history so an old uncertainty does not keep reappearing as new.
Common mistakes
Question becomes feature request
Keep learning needs separate from solutions.
No decision consequence
The backlog can grow without purpose.
Resolved questions stay open
Review and close the record.
Tips
Use one question per entry.
Keep a next review date.
Link the eventual answer back to its original evidence gap.
