Auto-Add GitHub Project Issues
Use the project built-in auto-add workflow to add repository items matching a supported filter. Existing matching items are not backfilled just because the workflow is enabled.
Step-by-step guide
Check access and scope
You need permission to configure project workflows and access to the target repository. Workflow counts and capabilities depend on the plan.
Open auto-add workflows
Open project Workflows and select Auto-add to project. Open the project menu, choose Workflows and select Auto-add to project; choose the repository before entering criteria.
Choose the repository
Choose the source repository.
- Worked example: Use a maintained release-review label to bring triaged issues into a launch project. Add preexisting work intentionally instead of assuming enabling the workflow imports the whole backlog.
Set supported filter criteria
Enter a narrow supported filter such as is:issue label:release-review.
Enable the workflow
Save and turn on the workflow.
Test a new matching issue
Create or update a harmless matching issue and inspect the project.
Verify the result
A matching newly created or updated issue appears and a nonmatching issue stays outside the project.
Common mistakes
Check the handoff edge case
A broad label filter can pull unrelated work into the project. Start with a narrow rule and inspect nonmatching examples.
