Use Project Iterations in GitHub
Create an iteration field to organize project items into repeating planning windows. Iteration assignment is project planning metadata; it does not change an issue deadline or guarantee delivery.
Step-by-step guide
Check access and scope
You need write access to the project and agreement on iteration dates, duration and breaks.
Create the iteration field
Add a new Iteration field from the project table. In table view, add a new field and choose Iteration; use project settings to adjust later windows and insert breaks.
Choose dates and duration
Set a meaningful name, initial start date and duration.
- Worked example: Use a two-week delivery window for internal invite-flow work, with a planned holiday break. Keep a release readiness decision separate from merely assigning an issue to that window.
Review iterations and breaks
Review generated iterations in project settings and insert breaks when needed.
Assign sample scope
Assign a small issue set and group the view by iteration.
Check current iteration
Use the current-iteration filter and verify upcoming work.
Verify the result
The current filter selects the intended dates and owners recognize their assigned work.
Common mistakes
Check the handoff edge case
Moving all remaining items forward can hide scope uncertainty. Review acceptance criteria before changing the planning window.
