Vote on Behalf of a Customer in Canny
Open the relevant post and use Add Voter in the right panel to find the customer. This records their request without requiring them to repeat it on your public board.
Before you start: Use an Admin role with vote-on-behalf permission and a real customer request. Verify the existing identity before adding a new person manually.
Worked example: A Northwind administrator asks support for scheduled exports. Record their vote on the existing request and retain the support context instead of voting from the support agent’s own account.
Step-by-step guide
Confirm the customer’s intent
Read the source conversation and make sure the request actually matches the post. Do not infer support from a customer’s general product usage.
Find the canonical request
Search for the existing post and compare its scope. Choose the same outcome, not a broad reporting topic with a similar title.
Use Add Voter
Open the post and click Add Voter on the right-hand panel. Search for the customer by their known identity.
Resolve attribution
Select the existing user where possible. If creating a manual user, check email and company association so the feedback is not split across duplicate identities.
Verify the evidence
Inspect the voter list and retain the source reference through an appropriate internal note. Check that the vote belongs to the customer rather than the agent.
Common mistakes
Manufacturing customer demand
Only attribute a vote when the source supports that customer’s request. A product hypothesis is not a vote.
