What Is Customer Retention? | Vantage

Customer Retention Customer retention is the ability of a product to keep its users over time. It is measured as the percentage of users (or revenue) retained from one period to the next. High retention indicates product-market fit: users find enough value to keep coming back. Low retention means the product is a leaky bucket where acquisition investment is wasted.

Why customer retention matters

Retention is the most important product metric because it compounds: a product retaining 95% monthly has 54% of users after 12 months, while one retaining 80% has only 7% after 12 months. Small improvements in retention have enormous long-term impact. Retention also indicates product-market fit more reliably than any other metric.

How it works

Measure retention curves by cohort: group users by signup week/month, then track what percentage return in each subsequent period. Common retention metrics: Day 1/7/30 retention for consumer apps, monthly/quarterly retention for B2B SaaS, and logo retention vs revenue retention (net dollar retention) for subscription businesses. The retention curve should flatten, not continue declining.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging retention across all cohorts (masks trends; recent cohorts may differ from older ones)

  • Not segmenting retention by user type (power users retain differently than casual users)

  • Focusing on acquisition when retention is the bottleneck (fixing a leaky bucket before filling it)

  • Using the wrong retention period (daily for B2B SaaS is meaningless; monthly or quarterly is appropriate)

  • Not distinguishing logo retention from revenue retention (you can retain logos while losing revenue to downgrades)
