Product Metrics Product metrics are the quantitative measures that track how a product is performing, whether users are getting value, and whether the business is healthy. They include acquisition metrics (how users find the product), activation metrics (how users reach value), engagement metrics (how often and deeply users use the product), retention metrics (whether users return), and revenue metrics (whether the product generates sustainable economics).
Why product metrics matters
What gets measured gets managed. Product metrics create a shared, objective picture of product health that prevents decisions based on anecdote or stakeholder opinion. They also create accountability: teams that commit to moving a metric own the outcome, not just the output. Without metrics, product success is undefined and impossible to improve systematically.
How it works
Build a metrics hierarchy: one North Star Metric that captures core value delivery, 3-5 input metrics that the team can directly influence, and diagnostic metrics for debugging problems. Instrument the product to capture events at every meaningful user action. Track metrics in a dashboard that the team reviews weekly. Set targets and review progress. Use metric changes to guide the next product decision.
Common mistakes
Tracking too many metrics (if everything is tracked, nothing is acted on)
Choosing vanity metrics (page views, total registered users) over actionable metrics (DAU, activation rate, retention)
Not segmenting metrics by user cohort or segment (averages mask important differences)
