What Is a Product Council? | Vantage
Product Council A product council is a cross-functional meeting of senior leaders (typically VP-level from product, engineering, design, sales, and customer success) who convene regularly to align on product priorities, resolve conflicts between teams, and make strategic tradeoff decisions that no single function can make alone.
Why product council matters
Without a product council, priority conflicts between functions are resolved through escalation, politics, or the loudest voice. A product council provides a structured forum for making cross-functional tradeoffs with full context from all stakeholder perspectives.
How it works
The council meets bi-weekly for 60 minutes with a decision-driven agenda (not status updates). Members present 2-3 decisions with context and options. The council debates, decides, and documents. Decisions are communicated to all teams. The PM leader typically facilitates.
Common mistakes
Using the council for status updates instead of decisions
Not giving the council real authority (overriding decisions undermines credibility)
Having too many members (6-8 is optimal for decision-making)
Not documenting and communicating decisions

How Vantage relates
Vantage provides the cross-project visibility that product councils need: conflict detection across PRDs, dependency mapping, and connected context from analytics and engineering. This enables data-informed council decisions rather than opinion-based debates.
