What Is a Product-Qualified Lead (PQL)? | Vantage
Product-Qualified Lead A product-qualified lead (PQL) is a user who has experienced meaningful value from the product during a free trial or freemium experience and has exhibited behavior that correlates with conversion to a paid plan. Unlike marketing-qualified leads (based on content engagement) or sales-qualified leads (based on sales conversations), PQLs are qualified by actual product usage.
Why product-qualified lead matters
PQLs convert at 5-10x the rate of MQLs because the user has already experienced the product value. For product-led growth companies, PQLs are the primary input to the sales team: instead of cold outreach, sales contacts users who are already getting value and helps them unlock more.
How it works
Define PQL criteria based on product usage signals that correlate with conversion: number of active users on the account, specific features used, frequency of use, or reaching a usage threshold. Example: a user who creates 3+ projects and invites 2+ team members in the first week is a PQL.
Common mistakes
Defining PQL criteria based on assumptions instead of data
Setting the bar too low (casual users become PQLs) or too high (only power users qualify)
Not updating PQL criteria as the product evolves
Treating PQLs like MQLs (aggressive sales outreach destroys the product experience)

How Vantage relates
Vantage uses a product-led growth model where users experience the full workflow (PRD generation, requirement extraction, ticket creation) on the free tier before upgrading. PQL signals include creating a project, generating a PRD, and inviting team members.
