What Is a Product Roadmap? | Vantage
Product Roadmap A product roadmap is a visual representation of the planned direction for a product. It communicates what the team intends to build, why it matters, and roughly when it will happen. A good roadmap aligns stakeholders around priorities without over-committing to specific dates.
Why product roadmap matters
Without a roadmap, teams operate reactively: building whatever seems most urgent without strategic direction. A roadmap provides the framework for saying no to requests that do not align with product strategy, and for saying yes to work that moves the product toward its goals.
How it works
Roadmaps typically organize work into time horizons: Now (this sprint/month), Next (next quarter), and Later (future). Each item connects to a strategic objective. The level of detail decreases as you move further out. Items in "Now" have detailed specs and tickets. Items in "Later" are themes or opportunities.
Common mistakes
Treating the roadmap as a promise instead of a plan
Too much detail too far in advance
Not connecting roadmap items to strategic objectives
Not updating the roadmap as priorities shift
Building the roadmap in isolation without stakeholder input

How Vantage relates
Vantage connects roadmap items to the PRDs, requirements, and tickets that implement them. When a roadmap priority changes, Vantage detects the downstream impact on specs and tickets. This keeps execution aligned with strategy without manual tracking.
