What Is the Product Trio? | Vantage
Product Trio The product trio is the core collaboration unit of modern product teams: the product manager, the product designer, and the tech lead. These three roles work together closely throughout discovery and delivery, bringing complementary perspectives: the PM owns the problem and business context, the designer owns the user experience, and the tech lead owns feasibility and architecture.
Why product trio matters
The product trio prevents the waterfall pattern of PM writes spec, hands to design, hands to engineering. By collaborating from the start, the trio produces solutions that are desirable (design), viable (product), and feasible (engineering) simultaneously, reducing rework and improving quality.
How it works
The trio participates together in discovery activities: customer interviews, assumption mapping, solution brainstorming, and prototype testing. They co-own the problem space and collaborate on solutions. The PM does not hand off a completed spec; the trio shapes the solution together.
Common mistakes
PM writing the entire spec before involving design and engineering
Not including the tech lead in customer conversations
The designer working in isolation on the UX before the trio aligns on the approach
Treating the trio as a committee (each member still owns their domain)

How Vantage relates
Vantage supports the product trio by providing a shared workspace where PM context (analytics, research), design context (Figma files), and engineering context (codebase) converge. The trio can query all connected data sources from one workspace.
