What Is Scope Creep? | Vantage

Scope Creep Scope creep is the gradual, uncontrolled expansion of a project scope beyond its original boundaries. It happens when new features, requirements, or changes are added without corresponding adjustments to timeline, budget, or resources. Scope creep is the number one cause of delayed releases and missed deadlines in product development.

Why scope creep matters

Scope creep turns a 4-week project into a 12-week project. Each addition seems small ("just one more thing") but they compound. The team loses focus, quality drops, and the original goal gets buried under additions. Preventing scope creep is one of the most important PM skills.

How it works

Scope creep happens through: stakeholder requests during development, "easy" additions that turn out to be complex, perfectionism (polishing beyond the spec), and unclear original scope that invites interpretation. Prevent it by: defining explicit non-goals in the PRD, requiring a scope change request for any addition, and using a "parking lot" for ideas that belong in a future release.

Common mistakes

  • Not having explicit non-goals in the PRD

  • Saying yes to every stakeholder request

  • Not tracking scope changes against the original plan

  • Adding "just one more thing" without removing something else

How Vantage relates

Vantage generates PRDs with explicit non-goals sections, which are the primary defense against scope creep. When a stakeholder requests an addition, the PM can reference the PRD non-goals to explain why it is out of scope for this release.
