Stakeholder Management Stakeholder management is the systematic practice of identifying people who have influence over or are affected by product decisions, understanding their needs and expectations, and communicating with them effectively. Stakeholders include leadership, engineering leads, designers, sales, customer success, and end users.
Why stakeholder management matters
Products succeed or fail based on stakeholder alignment. A PM who builds the right feature but fails to get stakeholder buy-in will face resistance, delayed approvals, and undermined decisions. Effective stakeholder management creates the organizational conditions for product success.
How it works
Map stakeholders by interest and influence: high-interest high-influence stakeholders need close management (regular 1:1s, early involvement in decisions). High-influence low-interest stakeholders need periodic updates. Low-influence high-interest stakeholders need information access. Tailor communication frequency, depth, and channel to each group.
Common mistakes
Treating all stakeholders equally (some need weekly updates, others need quarterly summaries)
Only communicating good news (hiding problems erodes trust faster than sharing them)
Not understanding stakeholder motivations (sales cares about deal closure, engineering cares about system quality)
Confusing stakeholder input with stakeholder approval (gather input broadly, but decision rights are narrow)
Not building relationships outside of project discussions (relationships built on trust handle conflict better)
