What Is a User Persona? | Vantage
User Persona A user persona is a fictional but realistic character that represents a key segment of your product's users. It includes demographics, goals, pain points, behaviors, and context. Personas make abstract user segments concrete and relatable.
Why user persona matters
Personas prevent the team from designing for "the user" (an abstraction) and instead designing for specific people with specific needs. They create a shared language: "Would Sarah the solo PM find this useful?" is a more productive question than "Would users find this useful?"
How it works
Create 3-5 personas based on user research data: interviews, surveys, analytics, and support conversations. Each persona has a name, role, goals, frustrations, tools they use, and a quote that captures their mindset. Use personas throughout the product development process: in PRDs, design reviews, and sprint planning.
Common mistakes
Creating personas from assumptions instead of research
Too many personas (3-5 is ideal)
Personas that are too generic ("busy professional")
Not updating personas as your user base evolves
Creating personas but never referencing them in product decisions
