What Is a Vanity Metric? | Vantage
Vanity Metric A vanity metric is a measurement that looks impressive in reports but does not inform product decisions or reflect real business health. Total registered users, page views, and app downloads are common vanity metrics: they only go up and do not tell you whether the product is actually working for users.
Why vanity metric matters
Vanity metrics create a false sense of progress. A product with 100K registered users and 2% monthly active rate is not healthy, but the 100K number looks great in a pitch deck. PMs who optimize for vanity metrics make bad product decisions because they are optimizing for the wrong signals.
How it works
Distinguish vanity from actionable by asking: can I act on this metric? Total registered users does not tell you what to build. Monthly active users segmented by feature usage tells you which features drive engagement. Actionable metrics inform specific product decisions.
Common mistakes
Reporting vanity metrics to stakeholders without context
Celebrating vanity metric growth while ignoring engagement decline
Using vanity metrics in OKRs (total downloads as a key result)
Not segmenting metrics to reveal actionable insights
