Custom Issue Type
Create a "Feature Request" issue type in Jira with a dedicated screen. Include fields: Request Title, Description, Requester (customer or internal), Business Impact (dropdown), User Segment (dropdown), and Votes (number). This separates requests from bugs and stories in your backlog.
Intake via JSM
Set up a Jira Service Management portal for feature requests. Create a request form with fields for problem description, expected outcome, business justification, and priority. Submissions create Feature Request issues automatically in your backlog project.
Triage Workflow
Configure a dedicated workflow: Submitted > Under Review > Approved > Scheduled > Delivered > Declined. Add validation rules: requests cannot move to Approved without an Impact Assessment. Use Jira automation to notify the requester when status changes.
Prioritization
Use Jira Advanced Roadmaps (formerly Portfolio) to score feature requests. Add custom fields for RICE scoring: Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort. Sort by RICE score to create a data-driven priority order.
Linking to Delivery
When a request is approved, link it to the implementation Epic using "is implemented by." This creates traceability from customer request to delivered feature. Close the request automatically when the linked Epic ships.
