Onboarding Flow Template for EdTech Products
EdTech onboarding must accomplish two things: assess where the learner is and deliver an immediate sense of progress. Learners who complete their first lesson within the first session retain at dramatically higher rates than those who spend the session configuring settings.
This template is designed for products where the learner is the primary user, not for admin-focused LMS onboarding.
Template sections
5 sections covering the complete onboarding workflow.
Learner Profile Assessment
Start with a short assessment (3-5 questions) that determines the learner's current level and goals. Frame it as personalization, not testing: "Help us customize your experience." Use the results to place them at the right starting point and avoid content that is too easy or too hard.
First Lesson Within 5 Minutes
Get the learner into actual content within 5 minutes of signup. The first lesson should be slightly below their assessed level to ensure a success experience. Completion of the first lesson is the activation event: the moment they feel progress.
Progress Visualization
After the first lesson, show tangible progress: a completion badge, a skill meter that moved, or a streak counter that started. Visual progress is addictive: it creates the desire to continue. Design the progress system to show movement even with small actions.
Engagement Hooks
Set up engagement loops during onboarding: daily goal selection (10 minutes, 20 minutes, or 30 minutes per day), streak tracking from day one, push notification or email reminders at the user's preferred learning time. Ask for notification permission after the first lesson success, not before.
Social and Accountability
If applicable, introduce social features after the second session: join a cohort, find a study partner, or share progress. Social accountability dramatically improves retention in education products. Time this after the learner has demonstrated commitment, not during initial signup.
