Template — EdTech

PRD Template for EdTech Products

EdTech products operate under unique constraints: FERPA compliance for student data, accessibility requirements under Section 508, and the need to align features with measurable learning outcomes. This template adds education-specific sections to the standard PRD.

Whether you are building for K-12 or higher education, these additional sections ensure your PRD addresses the regulatory and pedagogical requirements that generic templates miss.

Template sections

6 sections covering the complete prd workflow.

01

Problem Statement

Describe the educational problem with context: which learners are affected, what learning outcome is impacted, and how the current experience fails. Include data from LMS analytics, student feedback, or educator surveys.

02

FERPA Compliance

Identify which student education records are involved. Document consent requirements for data collection. Specify data sharing restrictions with third parties. Note directory information vs. protected records. Ensure the feature complies with the institution FERPA policy and any state-level student privacy laws like COPPA for under-13 users.

03

Learning Outcomes

Map the feature to specific learning outcomes or competencies. How does this feature improve learning efficacy? What pedagogical framework supports the design (Bloom taxonomy, constructivism, mastery learning)? Include measurable indicators of learning improvement.

04

Accessibility (Section 508)

Document accessibility requirements: screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, color contrast ratios (WCAG 2.1 AA minimum), captioning for video content, and alternative text for images. EdTech products serving public institutions must meet Section 508 standards.

05

LMS Integration

Specify LMS integration requirements: LTI 1.3 compliance, grade passback, roster syncing, and SSO via SAML or OAuth. Document which LMS platforms must be supported (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L).

06

Success Metrics

EdTech-specific metrics: student engagement rate, assignment completion rate, learning outcome improvement (pre/post assessment delta), educator adoption rate, and time-to-value for new institutions.
