One-Paragraph Problem
Describe the problem in one paragraph. Include: who has the problem, how you know (data or customer quotes), and what happens if you do not solve it. At a startup, this paragraph is the most important part of the PRD because it prevents building solutions to problems nobody has.
Success Criteria (3 max)
List exactly 3 success metrics. Startups that track 10 metrics track none. Pick the 3 that would prove this feature was worth building. Include baseline values if you have them, target values, and measurement method.
Scope Fence
Two lists: What we are building (5-8 items max) and What we are NOT building (3-5 items). The NOT list is more important at startups because small teams always want to add scope. Make the scope fence explicit and share it with every team member.
Implementation Notes
At a startup, the PM and engineering lead are often the same person or sit next to each other. Skip the detailed technical spec. Instead, note: key technical decisions, known risks, and any dependencies on third-party services.
