PRD Template for Founding Product Managers
A founding PM writes specs in a fast-changing environment where the product strategy might pivot next month. Your PRDs need to validate hypotheses quickly while giving engineers enough structure to build confidently.
This template balances speed with rigor: lightweight enough for a seed-stage company but structured enough that your 3-person eng team knows exactly what to build.
Template sections
5 sections covering the complete prd workflow.
Bet Statement
Replace the traditional problem statement with a bet: We are betting that [target users] will [desired behavior] if we [build this thing], and we will know within [timeframe] by measuring [metric]. This frames every feature as an experiment.
User Evidence
List the evidence that supports this bet: user interview quotes (with count), support tickets, analytics data, competitor observation. Be honest about evidence quality.
Minimum Spec
The smallest version that tests the bet. List 3-5 requirements max. If you have more than 5 requirements, you are over-scoping for a founding PM context.
What We Will Learn
Define what success and failure look like before building. This prevents the trap of shipping a feature and declaring victory regardless of results.
Founder Context
What does the founder or CEO need to know? Include strategic alignment, investor narrative impact, and any commitments made to early customers.
