Template sections

5 sections covering the complete sprint planning workflow.

01

Backlog Grooming Checklist

Before planning, use Jira filters to surface unestimated stories. Sort the backlog by priority rank in the Backlog view. Ensure every story in the top 20 has story points, acceptance criteria, and a linked epic.

02

Sprint Goal

Write one sprint goal in the Sprint Goal field when creating the sprint in Jira. The goal should be outcome-oriented, not a list of tickets. Example: "Customers can complete checkout with Apple Pay."

03

Capacity Planning

Use Jira velocity charts (Board > Reports > Velocity Chart) to find your 3-sprint average. Subtract capacity for PTO using team-managed calendars. Load the sprint to 70-80% of historical velocity.

04

Sprint Scope

Drag stories from the backlog into the sprint in priority order. Use Jira quick filters to isolate stories by component or label. Stop adding stories when total points reach your capacity target.

05

Definition of Done

Configure your board columns to reflect your Definition of Done: To Do, In Progress, Code Review, QA, Done. Add column constraints to limit WIP and prevent bottlenecks.
