Release Notes Template

Write clear, engaging release notes that communicate value and build trust. This template covers new features, improvements, bug fixes, and breaking changes.

Why release notes matter

Release notes are your recurring opportunity to demonstrate value. Every release is proof that the product is improving. Well-written release notes increase feature adoption, reduce support volume (users know about fixes and new capabilities), and build trust with customers who want to see active development.

The best release notes are concise, user-focused, and honest. They lead with value (what can users do now?), acknowledge issues (what was broken and is now fixed?), and communicate change transparently (what is different and why?). They are one of the most underrated product marketing channels.

Release notes template

Four sections for clear, complete release communication.

01

New Features

Lead with the headline features. For each new feature, describe what it does, who benefits, and how to use it. Write for users, not engineers. Skip implementation details. Focus on the value: what can users do now that they could not do before?

Example: "AI-powered conflict detection: Vantage now automatically scans your PRDs for conflicting requirements across projects. When two specs make incompatible assumptions about the same system, you will see a notification with the specific conflict and suggested resolution. No setup required."

Tips

  • Lead with the user benefit, not the technical change
  • Include "how to try it" for each feature
  • Screenshots or GIFs increase engagement significantly
  • Link to documentation for detailed walkthroughs
02

Improvements

List enhancements to existing features. These are changes that make existing workflows faster, smoother, or more reliable. Group by feature area. Users care about improvements to features they already use, so this section often drives more engagement than new features.

Example: "Faster PRD generation: Generation time reduced by 40% for projects with 10+ context sources. You will notice the difference immediately. Improved search: Search results now consider document recency and your interaction history, surfacing the most relevant results first."

Tips

  • Quantify improvements when possible (40% faster, 2x more results)
  • Group by feature area for easy scanning
  • Improvements to popular features deserve prominent placement
  • Include before/after comparisons when helpful
03

Bug Fixes

List resolved bugs that users reported or experienced. Be specific about what was broken and what the fix does. Acknowledging bugs transparently builds trust. Users who reported a bug want to know it was fixed. Users who experienced it silently want to know you were aware.

Example: "Fixed: PDF exports now correctly render tables with more than 6 columns. Previously, columns beyond the sixth were cut off. Fixed: The editor no longer loses unsaved changes when switching browser tabs during a long editing session."

Tips

  • Be specific about what was broken and what is fixed
  • Acknowledge user-reported bugs explicitly
  • Group by severity if there are many fixes
  • Users trust teams that acknowledge bugs openly
04

Breaking Changes and Deprecations

List any changes that require user action, alter existing behavior, or deprecate functionality. This section is critical for trust. Users who are surprised by breaking changes lose confidence. Be specific about what changed, why, and what users need to do.

Example: "Deprecation: The legacy CSV export format will be removed on September 1, 2026. Please switch to the new export format before then. API change: The /api/v1/search endpoint now requires a workspaceId parameter. Requests without it will return a 400 error."

Tips

  • Always provide advance notice for breaking changes
  • Include specific dates and migration instructions
  • Explain why the change is necessary
  • Offer support for users who need help migrating
