Create an Assumption Register in Notion
Use database records to separate assumptions from verified findings and link each assumption to evidence. This is a manual research workflow built from ordinary Notion properties.
Step-by-step guide
Check access and scope
Choose an owner for each assumption and define what would change the team decision. Avoid treating confidence labels as measured probabilities.
Record testable assumptions
Create an Assumptions database with statement, owner and decision impact.
Relate supporting evidence
Add an evidence relation to research records.
- Worked example: Assumption: new administrators understand invite expiry. Test whether representative participants can explain the expiry behavior from the interface without prompting; record failures alongside successful observations.
Define disconfirming observations
Write a disconfirming observation for each important assumption.
Schedule evaluation
Set an evaluation date and a proposed test.
Record the research outcome
Record whether results support, contradict or leave the assumption unresolved.
Verify the result
A reviewer can trace the assumption to evidence and tell which decision changes if it is false.
Common mistakes
Avoid the main failure mode
A vague statement such as Users want simplicity cannot guide a test. State the behavior, audience and condition you can actually observe.
Check the handoff edge case
Leaving a disproved assumption labeled Open hides learning. Record the result and the product decision it changes.
Sources and verification
