Product Strategy Template for Notion (Free)
Product strategy documents answer the question: why are we building what we are building? While PRDs describe what to build and tickets describe how to build it, the strategy document explains the reasoning behind these decisions.
This Notion template provides a structured format for documenting and communicating product strategy to stakeholders, leadership, and the team.
Template sections
5 sections covering the complete product strategy workflow.
Vision Statement
Write a one-sentence product vision that describes the future state you are working toward. It should be aspirational but achievable within 3-5 years. Test it: can every team member repeat it from memory? If not, it is too complex. Examples: "Make every PM's workflow connected and intelligent" or "Make financial services accessible to everyone."
Strategic Pillars
Define 3-4 strategic pillars: the major investment areas that will move you toward the vision. Each pillar should be a theme, not a feature. Examples: "Cross-project intelligence," "Self-learning workspace," "Seamless engineering handoff." Every feature and initiative should map to at least one pillar.
Target Audience
Define your primary audience with specificity: role, company stage, team size, pain points, and jobs to be done. Include who you are NOT building for (anti-persona). A clear audience definition is the most powerful prioritization tool: when in doubt, ask "does this serve our target audience?"
Competitive Positioning
Document your positioning relative to alternatives: what you do differently, why it matters, and what you are willing to sacrifice. Good positioning requires tradeoffs: you cannot be the fastest AND the most configurable AND the cheapest. Choose your advantage and own it.
Success Metrics and Milestones
Define the metrics that indicate strategic progress: north star metric, supporting KPIs, and quarterly milestones. Include both leading indicators (usage metrics) and lagging indicators (revenue, retention). Review these metrics monthly and adjust the strategy annually.
