Design Brief Template for EdTech Products

EdTech design briefs must balance engagement with effective learning. Gamification that drives engagement but does not improve learning outcomes is a failure. This template structures design briefs around learning effectiveness as the primary metric, with engagement as a supporting metric.

This template covers both learner-facing and educator-facing design considerations.

Template sections

5 sections covering the complete design brief workflow.

01

Learning Objective Alignment

Every design element should support a specific learning objective. Document: what the learner should be able to do after interacting with this feature, how the design facilitates that learning, and how you will measure whether learning occurred. Design for learning, not just engagement.

02

Learner Diversity

Document the range of learners this design must serve: age range, language proficiency levels, disability accommodations (visual, auditory, motor, cognitive), device diversity (school-provided vs. personal), and connectivity constraints (offline capability). EdTech must be more accessible than most software.

03

Progress and Feedback Design

Learning requires feedback loops. Design requirements for: immediate feedback on answers (correct/incorrect with explanation), progress visualization (how far through the module/course), mastery indicators (what the learner has demonstrated competency in), and streak/consistency tracking.

04

Engagement Without Distraction

Specify engagement mechanics carefully: gamification elements (points, badges, leaderboards), social features (cohorts, discussion), and achievement celebrations. Each element must be evaluated against distraction risk: does it pull attention from learning or reinforce it?

05

Educator Dashboard

If the feature has an educator view, document what instructors need: class-level progress, individual learner attention flags, content completion rates, assessment results, and intervention triggers. Educators need actionable data, not dashboards for dashboards' sake.
